Understanding sustainability—and knowing what it takes to make an organization sustainable—is a skill increasingly valued by employers. Here at SBA, we understand that one of the best ways we can prepare our students for a successful career is by ensuring they recognize the importance of sustainability to an organization, and have the confidence to become the sustainable leaders of the future. Our students are taught socially responsible business practices and why there is a business case for ethical decision making, workplace diversity and women in leadership. We draw on real-life business experience to demonstrate the power of organizational sustainability to our students, bringing guest experts into the classroom and using field trips to organizations to demonstrate leading sustainability practices.
SBA students are afforded insight into strong corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. SBA works closely with two United Nations initiatives—the Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME)—that provide students and faculty with opportunities related to sustainability. SBA sits on the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact UAE Local Network with organizations such as Majid Al-Futtaim, DEWA, Societe Generale and Chalhoub Group, and sits on the Board of the United Nations PRME Business for Peace Working Group. SBA’s work with the Pearl Initiative and Hawkama, UAE-based business initiatives focused on good governance in the region, also furthers SBA’s deep relationship with local companies. Understanding these relationships and how robust sustainability outcomes can be achieved in real-life settings places students in good stead for future roles across many organizations and industries.
SBA faculty are also heavily engaged in teaching and research related to sustainability. Every undergraduate student in SBA takes course content on sustainability and business ethics through required coursework in the school taught by experts in the field. Our faculty also produce substantial research, with roughly 25 percent of all peer-reviewed research published by SBA faculty in sustainability and related themes.
SBA also enjoys a close relationship with AUS Sustainability, the entity responsible for advancing sustainability at the university. AUS Sustainability supports SBA and its students by providing financial resources for sustainability-related projects through the Sustainability Project Fund. AUS Sustainability also connects our faculty and students with relevant subject matter experts, and provides us with institutional data for sustainability-related research projects. Students can also directly contribute to the university’s sustainability-related causes by becoming EcoReps or volunteering for sustainability events.
